International Student Fellowships

Those of you who are international students know how difficult it is to find awards and fellowships for which you are eligible. The International Center, which is really all things to all international students on campus, had me put together a list of fellowships which don't restrict applications by citizenship, and I thought I would repost some of the highlights here.

Fellowships for which some international students are eligible:

• All Social Science Research Council Fellowships (including International Dissertation Fellowships).
• Most University of California fellowships (Pacific Rim, UC-MEXUS, UREP Field Research, Natural Reserve System, Biotechnology Research and Education GREAT Training grants, Humanities Research Institute Residential Fellowships, Tobacco-Related Disease Research fellowships, Toxic Substances Research and Teaching program graduate fellowships, Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation fellowships, Linguistic Minority Research Institute Dissertation fellowships, UC Institute for Research in the Arts fellowships, Center for Nanotechnology in Society Graduate Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences awards, the University-wide AIDS Reseach Program, UC ACCORD Dissertation fellowships, and the Labor and Employment Research Fund awards).
• Guggenheim Foundation Fellowships for investigating the causes of violence and aggression in modern society
  
• Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellowships in the social sciences and humanities
• All Getty research grants
• Wenner-Gren Foundation fellowships for anthropological research
• Spencer Foundation Dissertation Research Fellowships in Education
• NSF Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grant (note: NSF predoctoral grant requires citizenship or permanent residency)
• Kate Neal Kinley Fellowship in the Arts
• American Heart Association Predoctoral Fellowships
• All Smithsonian fellowships
• American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research Doctoral Fellowships
• Medieval Academy of America grants and fellowships
• California Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship
• NASA Earth and Space Science Fellowship (note: preference is given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents)
• American Geophysical Union Horton Research Grant
• American Association for University Women International Fellowships
• NOAA National Estuarine Research Reserve System fellowship

This is by no means a comprehensive list, and, as always, I encourage you to do your own searching. UCLA's GRAPES search engine has a specific function which allows you to exclude awards only open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
