UCSD Grant Writing/Funding Fest 2008

Although this event primarily targets postdocs and junior faculty, much of it looks to apply to those of you interested in fellowship/grant writing in general, as well as those of you at the later stages of your educations looking for postdoc opportunities this year or next. Here's the schedule:

The San Diego Postdoc Training Consortium and the TSRI Society of Fellows presents

SPRING GRANTSMANSHIP AND FUNDING FEST 2008

This is a three part comprehensive program that includes presentations by various funding agencies to learn about various funding opportunities, how-to grantwriting workshops and an opportunity to submit a grant for review by a practice mock study section.

PART I: Learning about funding opportunities

Program directors from California and national funding organizations will describe various funding mechanisms available from their institutions, detail types of research experience relevant for different grants and current funding priorities, share general grant writing tips, and answer questions about their organizations and grant writing.

  • American Heart Association: April 3, 2pm, Burnham (Fishman Auditorium)

PART II: Grantwriting

  • Grantwriting 101: APRIL 10, 1:30pm
    Keck Amphitheater, Beckman Center, TSRI
This workshop will address finding grants, identifying online resources, targeting your search based on your research area, tips for writing grant sections, and common mistakes. This workshop is intended for individuals who are new to fellowship and grant writing and want a general overview of the process.

  • Career development grants for sr. postdocs and jr. faculty: MAY 1, 1:30pm and Insights on the NIH Review Process: MAY 1, 3:30pm
    Keck Amphitheater, Beckman Center, TSRI
Experienced faculty members and NIH administrators will highlight best practices for writing compelling K, R, and transition grants and will address the grant review process. This workshop is intended for individuals with experience in writing fellowships and are now looking to apply for career transition or RO1 grants and need critical advice from successful faculty and grant administrators.

PART III: Mock Study Sections

  • Mock Study Sections: MAY 3, 9:00am (all day event)
    Keck Amphitheater, Beckman Center, TSRI
Postdocs, graduate students, and junior faculty can participate in mock study sections to review grant applications and have their own funding proposals reviewed by peers. Participants will gain first-hand knowledge of the grant review process by becoming active contributors in a mock review section. Mock study sections will be facilitated by NIH guest speakers and faculty experts.
