Fulbright Season...again?
I've had a few phone calls in the last couple of days about next year's Fulbright competition at UCSD. Here's my version of a FAQ.
Who can apply?
Anyone who has not received a Ph.D. is eligible for a Fulbright. Students currently enrolled at UCSD and recent graduates (up to five years) will be supported, as long as they can make it to San Diego for an interview. (Our faculty committee has requested no phone interviews in the future--they don't give a good sense for a candidate.)
When should I apply?
The competition opens in May. UCSD's intra-campus deadline is usually the second week of September.
What language skills does my country require? Should I set up an affiliation with a university in the country?
All of these questions vary by country, and you should consult the individual country summaries to find out more.
How many people get Fulbrights from UCSD each year?
It depends on how many apply, but in percentage terms, we usually see 15-25 percent awarded.
What happens after I submit my application to you?
I look it over and assign it to two members of the faculty committee who have some expertise in your area of study or the region of the world you want to visit. You are then assigned an interview time. Interviews last about 45 minutes and you may or may not be tested on any language skills that you state in your application. These are informational, and although the campus committee does assign you a rating, professors are mostly there to help you improve your application. So don't worry.
